I’m Chuck Cary, and I invite you to join my journey in and around Promontory Ranch Club in Park City, Utah.
I’ll admit it, as a former professional athlete who loves to golf, getting on the Promontory Club golf courses was at the top of my list! Anyone driving through the property is greeted with those emerald green fairways ebbing and flowing naturally through the hilly landscape. It calls out your name to come play – and so I wasted no time! Renowned golf course designer, Pete Dye, really out-did himself designing the first golf course at Promontory – The Dye Course. His palette was the northwest portion of Promontory known for its canyons and vistas. I teamed up with some friendly Promontory Members and we started our warm-up at the Golf House Driving Range.
Holy Wasatch – what a view to the three Park City and Deer Valley ski areas! The mountain-tops crest above the lush carpet of the driving range which falls down the grade of Promontory’s geographic center. I was trying very hard to keep my eyes on my golf ball!
Soon, we were silently gliding along on our state-of-the art golf cart and started the front nine.
I was met with expansive space and vistas and gorgeous custom homes that were tucked neatly beside, but out of the way, of the course. The back nine changed a lot in topography. Gone were the wide spaces, and now the fairways looked narrower as they traced along shallow canyons. I will confess to a couple of errant shots I made that kicked back to the center of the fairway and my golf companions confirmed that the Dye Course is known to be a forgiving course for those occasional hooks and slices.
I don’t think anyone can be ready for what greets you at the 15th tee – a switchback cart path takes you to a mini-summit where you tee off ‘on top of the world’! There are no words…..
What we did have plenty to talk about, during a delicious lunch at The Hearth, was how much fun we had playing a round of golf. Alright, as if that wasn’t awesome enough, the next day I hit the links at the recently completed Jack Nicklaus Golf Course located at the southwest portion of the property. Words that come to mind are sleek, contemporary, flowing and elegant.
This part of Promontory is very different – the hills are long and sloping and the sky is big. Jack Nicklaus used the inspiration of the movie, ‘A River Runs Through It’ to design this course. You could almost put a fly rod in your bag and chase the water from hole to hole, especially from the 3rd tee.
I decided after a few holes that what I really needed on this long course was more work on my short game! Fortunately, Promontory has some of the best golf instructors in the U.S.! Tom Rogers, the Director of Golf, told me that at Promontory, they give more than 500 golf lessons in a season! In addition to men’s golf, Promontory is super busy with clinics, junior programs, women’s golf, tournaments and social golf. The Sunday afternoon Couples Nine-and-Dine is always sold out.
Promontory Golf is all about friendly, relaxed and fun golf. Each golf cart has a ‘Play’ card that describes how “It’s okay to play golf just for fun”. These tips help beginning and infrequent players know how they can help their play move along, so that the pace of play works for everyone. From serious golf to social golf, at Promontory, it’s all about Park City golf the fun way! So, if you are looking for a Park City luxury home community that combines golf and the good life, call me, and we’ll grab a cold one and head out to experience all that Promontory Club has to offer!
