fashionshot“Beauty begins when you decide to be yourself”  … such wise words from Coco Channel.  What better way is there to develop a month long camp for our young people than to combine fashion with art, inspiration and education, keeping the core value of one’s inner beauty in focus.   Our Promontory Kids’ Cabin just completed a month long camp that did just that!   Campers created their very own personal style, looking at the trend setters, and most of all, looked to fashion to bring out the inner beauty that we all possess.  Weekly design challenges and guest speakers helped framed the month long Promontory Fashion Camp.Frank

John Oswald, formerly with the “Paul Frank” company, shared the vision behind the brand’s monkey, Julius. Paul Frank is a bright lifestyle brand. Those who know the monkey know the brand Paul Frank.   John’s projects now include “Cuipo” where he oversees the development of the brand.  Cuipo is a company whose mission is a fashion lifestyle brand dedicated to preserving prime rainforests around the globe.  John Oswald, our guest to Promontory Fashion Camp, inspired  the children as they heard how John uses his talents and creativity to be a part of great branding in the fashion industry, as well as being conscientious of the world at large.

George Hrdina, is a Promontory member and long time Group President for Ralph Lauren.  George managed all the Men’s/ Women’s, Children’s and Home collections in Hong Kong-China, Japan, S. Korea Singapore and Australia as well as the rest of Southeast Asia.   George was President to Ralph Lauren Children’s wear, which he launched and help build.   His visit to our camp was all about Ralph Lauren!  His presentation was insightful, energizing and related to the life style the young people have grown up with.ralphlauren 

The campers learned about fashion trends, style and the industry.  Not only was the day educational, it was motivating, too!  Dreaming is not just for the young — but for the young at heart!  When Ralph Lauren began designing his clothing line, he used his love for movies to frame his style and vision.  He is quoted to saying, “ I don’t design clothes, I design dreams”.  Ralph Lauren launched his first full line of menswear in 1968. The name ‘Polo’ was chosen for the brand because of the discreet elegance and classic style which the sport embodies.  We thank our special guest, George Hrdina for bringing the style of Ralph Lauren to our Promontory Fashion Camp!

Shauna Miller, another Promontory member and young style guru has published a book called, “Penny Chic”.  As a graduate of New York University, Shauna has found her niche in the fashion world as a blogger and publisher.  Her idea is that “you can look great for less”.  Each of the campers were able to end the month with Shauna’s book, “Penny Chic”.pennychic

Our camp’s final inspiration was the iconic Coco Channel.  Raised in an orphanage, she became a seamstress to the young women she associated with, and with her outgoing personality Coco was quickly liked by many. As she grew old enough to be on her own, Coco continued her dreams to design fashion.  She was the one to introduce “the little black dress” and suiting.  Creating timeless pieces, she has said, “Everyday is a runway and the world is your runway”.

Whether its Coco Channel or Ralph Lauren, our Promontory Fashion Camp educated and created a whole new view for our young campers to explore their creative side!  Because when you come to camp, the aspen trees that line the walks not only lead you to adventure, they lead you to fashion, too! manequin
