As I walked down the stairs at the Ranch Clubhouse, I was nervous. Sure, I was headed to the Spa which sounds inherently relaxing, but I had never received a facial, so I had no idea what to expect. I opened the door, and was instantly enveloped in an environment that would prove to be a refuge for the next hour. Stress became a distant memory when I heard a waterfall and soothing music, saw all-natural candles floating atop a medley of tricolor stones, smelled a very subtle hint of citrus, and felt the tall, soft couch cushions pressing against my back while I waited for the unknown.

If I wasn’t already relaxed, meeting the spa manger Chelsea Eckersell, put me completely at ease. As she gave me a tour of the spa, I was impressed with her extensive knowledge of the Image Skincare products, and the wide variety of massage, exfoliations, and facial treatments the spa offers. I had a lot to learn. I have been on many massage tables in my day, but usually they were located in brightly lit hotel rooms in a foreign country, and generally, I was getting a body part taped up, or a muscle released while my teammates waited their turn. Fortunately, my experience at Promontory’s Spa was nothing like being treated by a physical therapist donating their time to the United States Ski Team.

I had only been at the spa for 20 minutes, but I already felt like I’d known Chelsea for years. She explained the steps of the Natural Radiance Facial before I happily surrendered to her cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing treatment. I trusted her evaluation of my skin because she is a master esthetician and I was pleased to learn that despite my best friend’s comment, “you have the cutest crow’s feet,” my skin type is not prone to wrinkling. However, like everyone, especially those of us with freckles, I am prone to sun damage. Utah’s beautiful weather and culture of outdoor recreation combine to put all of our skin at risk. So, strategically, Chelsea ended the facial by applying a tinted Image lotion with broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. I inspected my skin and it was glowing. Or maybe it was just the natural looking tint!

The key to keeping our skin hydrated and youthful is no secret and it is not new information. Wear sunscreen! Remember the graduation speech by Mary Schmich that went viral circa 1997? Well, the first lines were, “Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.” The information has not changed in the last decade, but the products to protect you have improved over time. No longer are medicinal scents and greasy residue a prerequisite for a sunscreen. The Promontory Spa carries the entire line of Image Skincare’s sun protection products to suit your skin type and your preferences. Go see Chelsea for the health of your skin and the sake of your soul!
